The Incorporation of Library And E-Learning Systems: The Case of Selected Universities in Uganda
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: This study explores the integration of library and e-learning services to enhance teaching and learning in higher education institutions in Uganda.
Objectives: The research aimed to (i) identify electronic technologies and applications used in providing library services, (ii) investigate how library applications and processes facilitate access to e-learning content, (iii) determine library services that are incorporated into e-learning, (iv) assess how Ugandan higher learning institutions support e-learning, and (v) offer recommendations for better integration of library and e-learning services to improve teaching and learning.
Methodology: A qualitative research approach was adopted, focusing on three universities in Uganda: Cavendish University Uganda, Metropolitan International University, and Victoria University Uganda. Data collection methods included web analysis, in-depth interviews, and documentary reviews, involving library officers, librarians, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) directors/technicians.
Findings: The study underscores the significance of integrating library and e-learning services for educational enhancement. Key recommendations include the need for libraries to subscribe to more electronic resources and ensure their accessibility via the e-learning platform. Furthermore, it suggests that universities should regularly update their ICT infrastructure to meet the demands of growing enrollment rates and evolving technological needs.
Recommendations: To optimize the benefits of integrated library and e-learning services, the study recommends a strategic enhancement of electronic resource subscriptions and a proactive approach in upgrading ICT infrastructure in line with current and future demands.
