Abstract

Objective: This study aimed at developing an Online Diagnostic Lab Information Management System (IMS) for Mengo Hospital to replace the existing manual, paper-based system. By transitioning to an online system, the goal was to enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of managing patient information, staff records, and diagnostic test data, thereby reducing the time and resources currently expended on such tasks.

Methodology: A cross-sectional study design was employed, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. Quantitative data were gathered through multi-stage cluster and systematic sampling, while qualitative insights were obtained via purposive sampling and focus group discussions. The sample comprised 30 technical staff and 25 support staff members, totaling 55 participants. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire designed to gather detailed information on the existing information systems and the anticipated benefits of an integrated online system.

Participants: Among the respondents, 63% were female and 37% were male, indicating a higher participation rate among females. The age distribution of participants showed that the majority (37%) were between 36 and 45 years old, followed by 25% in the 25-35 and above 45 age groups, and 13% were below 24 years.

Findings: The development of the "Online Diagnostic Lab IMS" promises significant improvements in the security and efficiency of data management within Mengo Hospital's diagnostic services. The system enables swift retrieval of patient histories with just a single click, streamlining information processing and ensuring faster, more accurate maintenance of patient details. Additionally, the new system is expected to substantially reduce bookkeeping tasks, thereby minimizing human error and enhancing both speed and accuracy in data handling.

Conclusion: The Online Diagnostic Lab Information Management System represents a pivotal advancement in Mengo Hospital's diagnostic service provision. By automating data management processes, the system not only promises to improve operational efficiency and data security but also significantly contributes to the quality of patient care through faster and more reliable access to diagnostic information.
