Basic Pay and Performance of Teachers in Universal Primary Schools in Nyabushozi County, Kiruhura District, Uganda

Abstract
This study examined the relationship between basic pay and teachers’ performance in universal primary schools in Nyabushozi County, Kiruhura District, Uganda with an objective:
- To establish the relationship between basic pay and performance of teachers in Primary Schools in Kiruhura District.
A cross-sectional design involving both qualitative and quantitative approaches was used to gather data from 164 respondents who included teachers and head teachers in primary schools in Nyabushozi County, Kiruhura District. Data was collected using questionnaires and an interview guide.
The study found that there was no significant and positive relationship between basic pay and teachers’ performance in primary schools in Nyabushozi County, Kiruhura District. However, it concluded that there is a significant and positive relationship between basic pay and teachers’ performance in primary schools.
The following recommendation was made: the government through the Ministry of Education and Sports, the founders and management of educational institutions should increase teachers’ basic pay to enhance their performance.
